Did you know that the #Shuswap is represented in the “Quilt of Belonging” which is part of Canada’s most comprehensive textile art project housed in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Ottawa? In this textile mosaic, each person can experience a sense of belonging and find a place in the overall design – there is “A Place for All”. Elder Mary Thomas who made the Shuswap square is a great-grandmother with a host of skills: beadwork, making baby moccasins, tanning deer hides, creating coiled-root and pine-needle baskets and weaving bulrush mats, to name but a few. Mary’s block represents a bear’s paw, made in brown felt with an outline of flattened porcupine quills. A brilliant sun peeks between the mountain top, which is also in natural quills, all appliquéd onto a cotton background.

This is a space where #Shuswap artists, writers and composers may share with the community, the art that they create during this period of isolation. The Third House is inviting you to send your isolation artwork to joyces@thethirdhouse.ca and it will be posted in the gallery on their website.
